Canine Good Citizen

At the Windhoek Dog Club, we offer Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Tests for Puppies (4-9 months), as well as Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels. We follow the KUSA (Kennel Union of Southern Africa) standards.

The CGC Test is a simple but valuable way to demonstrate your dog’s good behaviour in everyday situations. It shows that your dog is well-mannered around people and other dogs, and that you can maintain control, even when your dog is excited.

During the test, both handler and dog are assessed in a variety of common scenarios, such as:

• Waiting calmly alone for a short period without barking or becoming anxious
• Walking on a loose leash without pulling
• Coming when called
• Engaging in play and then settling down
• Allowing an unfamiliar person (e.g., a vet) to handle their body, ears, etc.
• Entering a car
• Walking through a gate

These skills make life with your dog much easier and more enjoyable—for both of you!

At Windhoek Dog Club, we are dedicated to helping you and your dog prepare for the CGC tests which we often offer at our Fun Shows, Non-Championship Shows and  Championship Shows. We offer regular testing and evaluation sessions throughout the year. If your dog isn’t quite ready for all of the exercises, don’t worry—you can always try again at the next testing opportunity and repeat any parts that need improvement.

There are four CGC levels: Puppy, Bronze, Silver, and Gold. For each level, your dog will receive a beautiful rosette and a certificate as a symbol of your hard work and progress.
